The State Department’s page of Visa Bulletins – this is the publication that shows how the immigration line is moving for different preference categories. Archives go back to 2002.

IowaLegalAid.org on who can get food stamps – this is a pretty clear explanation of how immigrants do and do not qualify for federal assistance.

DHS Immigration Data and Statistics &mdash: Department of Homeland Security reports on recent immigration statistics.

USCIS resources page — Especially links on the right and Reports & Studies menu item on the left.

Migration Policy Institute — Think tank “dedicated to analysis of the movement of people worldwide”; lots of research and data.

American Immigration Council — Advocacy and research; describes itself as “promoting laws, policies, and attitudes that honor our proud history as a nation of immigrants.” See esp. “Topics” menu items.

LaborEcon Blog — Blog of George Borjas, a Harvard economist sometimes termed “academia’s leading immigration skeptic”.

Gale Virtual Reference Library – The Gale Virtual Reference Library compiles academic encyclopedia entries (think of it as an academic-vetted Wikipedia).

JSTOR academic article database — Academic articles from all fields.

America: History and Life – More academic articles, on U.S. and Canada prehistory to present.

* Chronicling America – Large collection of (smaller) U.S. newspapers, pre-1923.

ProQuest News and Newspapers — Current and historical, make sure to set your search settings.

Access World News  – Interested in foreign newspapers? Check out this database of English-language news from around the world, as well as news sources in Spanish, German, French, and a few other languages. Mostly recent decades. (The link goes to the library’s catalog page on this, click through from there to log in with your IdentiKey).

* HathiTrust Digital Library — Books, pamphlets, government reports, etc.; many public domain and fully available.

* Digital Public Library of America — Images, audio, video, text, historical and current.

* American Memory — A collection of documents, books, etc. from the Library of Congress.
